Buck is ill with Cygnus fever, a disease to which the citizens of the Twenty-Fifth Century are immune, but his more ‘primitive’ physiology is unable to ward off. Meanwhile, the Searcher plays host to a party of Saurian diplomats, members of a lizard-like race at war with Earth, who now wish to negotiate terms for their surrender. Earth Ambassador Cabot and his aides are also aboard the vessel, but unknown to Admiral Asimov and his crew, they are actually Saurian infiltrators using Image Screen devices to poses as humans; these Saurian agents are planning to seize control of the Searcher so that they can use it destroy Earth’s Delta Defense Station, an act that will leave humanity open to invasion. Because of his current illness, Buck is the only person who can see through the Saurians’ disguises; unfortunately, no-one believes him - and unless he can convince his friends of Cabot’s real identity, galactic war will soon erupt between Earth and Sauria…
